Description
This was a poem written when….
…the poet was only seven plus ten!
As a tribute to his rugby team,
For their performances held in high esteem!
(Year 2003)
Donning the blue jersey, wearing studded boots
Amidst the fans cheers, amidst the others hoots
Spilling into the field with one aim in heart
To give all I’ve have got, to do my very part.
“Tweet” goes the whistle to denote ‘play ball’
The ball was kicked higher than buildings very tall.
‘My ball’ comes the cry from the forwards in the pack,
It’s a do or die affair, there’s no turning back
The oval shaped ball was passed from hand to hand
The “bone crunching” tackles made players hit the sand
When I said to myself, I just started this rhyme
“Tweet” went the whistle to denote half time
Mr Priyadharshana the coach shouts off some ploys
As water was carried out to the battered up boys
Re-energised they run into the field
For school to make sure that victory is sealed
Tries and goals were hard to come by
For all our sporadic moves were stopped by some guy
“Tweet” went again the whistle to our relief
We had won the game to the opponents’ disbelief
Battered up and bruised we walked off the ground
As slogans of Wesley were the only audible sounds
Mr Mudannayake ran up to congratulate his team
With a slight pot belly and an ever glowing beam
He said we had brought ‘Honour and glory’ to school
Being heroes for one day was an experience really cool
Backs were warmly patted and good byes were being said
For fifteen young guys to tuck themselves in bed
